5 Great Mother’s Day Gifts Ideas

5 Great Mother’s Day Gifts Ideas

1. Godiva Chocolate in a FEED bag! What could be a better combination than chocolate, philanthropy and fashion?! Each FEED 10 bag provides 10 school meals for children, and women in Liberia handcraft each one.

2. Anything Tory Burch, but  Shop for a cause makes spending all that money feel better! All purchases from the Tory Burch Shop for a Cause store donate a portion to the Tory Burch Foundation  which provides economic opportunities to women and their families in the United States.

3. For the eco-conscious mom who loves to entertain, this beautiful Sparq cheese plate is made from re-purposed soapstone.  Soapstone absorbs and retains various temperatures, so it functions as a warmer to keep appetizers warm, or a cooler that keeps cheese plates or sushi cool. Just stick it in the oven or freezer before setting out your food. This one was sent to me to try out and I totally love it, for both its form and function!

4. Felix Doolittle stationary Products: You will find the most beautiful designs in book plates, food labels, stationary and note cards. It is just hard to choose one design!

5.Sentimental Jewelry like the birds nest necklace from uncommon goods, or Heather Moore charms that can be personalized are always a hit.

Don’t forget the option of a homemade gift; those are always my favorite ones as a mom!

*  I received a free Sparq soapstone thermal appetizer plate for reviewing purposes. (and I totally love it! Thank you Sparq!)  All my opinions are my own and not swayed by outside sources.

Hit Your Target

Hit Your Target

Downtown Aspen

When I say hit your Target, I mean hit your local Target store May 6th, and be there when they open!   I’m serious, mark your calendars because if you can’t make it to Aspen this year to get your fancy Cos Bar products you are in luck! For six weeks starting May 6th the Aspen based spa and beauty company that celebrities love will be offering their products at your local Target store.  Also available on May 6th will be products from Polka Dot Dog Bakery of Boston, The Candy Store of San Francisco, The Webster of Miami and Privet House of Warren, Ct.

This is part of Targets’ brilliant mini-store concept, bringing high end designers and products to us common folk for limited engagements.

A few months ago I found myself at 8:25 am on a Sunday morning zipping through the deserted streets of the commercial area near me.  A woman flew past me and ran the red light I had reluctantly stopped at!

My Jason Wu for Target scores

I had to laugh because I knew exactly where she was heading! Target was opening at 8:30 and the Jason Wu line was about to debut. If, like me, you missed out on the Missoni frenzy when they released that limited edition collection, you would understand why she was willing to fly through a red light for this one.  I screeched into the parking lot as she parked, jumped out of my car and shouted after her  “I knew you were coming here!”  We both laughed and raced through the just opened doors.  Other shoppers were already in the store grabbing at  the racks of Jason Wu.  By 8:45 that morning the racks were nearly picked clean of the designers’ Target collection.  So set your alarm clocks, and wear your track shoes, May 6th could be a crazy morning at Target! See you there!

The New “It” Bag

The New “It” Bag

Envirosax

Like magician’s silk scarves, the woman in front of me began pulling environmentally friendly shopping bags out of her purse.   These were not the boxy earth toned bags I now realized I had left in my car. …again. They were silky nylon, brightly colored, and geometrically patterned accessories.   They were, dare I say, stylish?  As she rolled her colorful cart away from the grocery checkout, and I sheepishly requested, “paper please”, I pondered the environmentally friendly shopping sack as the new “it” bag.   Sure my shopping bags were practical, but attractive?  Never.   I am a big believer in functional design, and love the idea that if there is an item you must carry, it may as well be appealing.  These days, plastic is passé, and though paper will do, to look like a truly savvy shopper the reusable bag is de-rigueur.    While my ice cream melted holes in my paper bags once home, I raced to my computer to track down some pretty shopping bags of my own.  A couple of the brands I found that make carrying your own shopping bags hip, are baggu and envirosax.  Of course I had to purchase my own silky colorful bags to carry, and these bags hold a ton, do not rip, and they fit in tiny pouches or roll up and snap to fit easily in your purse.  I was also excited since then to find flip & tumble produce bags, so I can avoid  plastic at the grocery store altogether.   I have since given them as gifts to my like-minded environmentally conscientious friends, and since they do fit so neatly in my purse, I have no excuse to forget them in the car again.

The Oscar’s Are My Superbowl

The Oscar’s Are My Superbowl

Before having kids I worked in film production for over a decade.   Although I ultimately ended up pursuing Documentary film, my career began with Hollywood Movies.  I also happen to be a passionate movie viewer who loves fashion, and the combination makes the Oscar’s my personal Superbowl.

Sometimes I’ll organize a party around them, and sometimes, (like last night) I’ll watch in my Pajamas with onion dip & chips.  Either way the show is a total guilty pleasure that I devour! There! I confessed!  My favorite dress of the night was worn by Penelope Cruz.  I also loved the looks on Viola Davis,Gwyneth Paltrow,Octavia Spencer, Meryl Streep, and Shaun Robinson.  Angelina Jolie looked beautiful too (much less harsh than usual).  Check out photos  on Yahoo’s 2012 Oscar’s Red Carpet Report Card.

Objects of Desire: Zen Cake

Objects of Desire: Zen Cake

Yin-Yang represents the ancient Chinese understanding of how the universe works. How contrary forces are interconnected, and independent in the natural world, and give rise to each other in turn.
I found this in the bakery case at Whole Foods. I mean, really, how could I NOT get it! Turns out is was as delicious as it is aesthetically alluring. It has a HoHoesque taste , if all the ingredients in the HoHo were fresh and creamy, (not dry like HoHo’s can be…not that I eat HoHo’s often…..) and fluffy! Yum!
