(RED), U2 & Bank of America Soup Up Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl is all about the commercials for me.

During this Sunday’s game my favorite was the commercial featuring U2 performing their new song, “Invisible”. You can download that song from iTunes, for free, and in doing so you will be helping out in the fight agains HIV/AIDS.  From 6pm EST Sunday, until 11:59pm EST Monday, every time the track is downloaded, anywhere in the world, Bank of America will donate $1 to the Global Fund to help end mother-to-child transmission of HIV. This Super Bowl Sunday, was an incredible moment in the fight to end AIDS as the new partnership between (RED), U2, and Bank of America launched. Check it out & download the song :

Every single dollar raised will go to the Global Fund to provide life-saving HIV/AIDS treatment, testing and prevention services to tens of millions of people in the world’s poorest countries. Over the next two years the partnership between (RED), U2 and Bank of America will mean more than $10 million for the Global Fund.

The 2014 Gates Annual Letter & Myth Busting

The 2014 Gates Annual Letter & Myth Busting

I wanted to stand up and shout “Bravo” after reading the 2014 Gates Annual Letter this week. It is so well done.  Of course we’ve come to expect no less from Bill & Melinda Gates these days as they seem to be driving the search for solutions to the world’s toughest problems. In fact earlier this month Bill Gates was declared the Most Admired Person in the world in a global survey done by YouGov for the Times of London. What I love about the letter this year is the clear-cut way three false beliefs that hinder development are tackled. An optimist myself, the hopeful predictions in this letter make me want to stand up and cheer.

“By 2035, there will be almost no poor countries left in the world”.- Bill Gates

The Myth Busters Live show came through town recently, and my family and I really enjoyed it. Having been fans of the TV show, we gleefully watched popular myths disproved on stage as science trumped assumptions time after time.  So it is a thrill for me that Bill & Melinda Gates have taken the Myth Busters approach to dispel three pervasive myths surrounding our ability to put an end to global poverty. The 2014 Gates Annual Letter, published this past week,  like the Myth Busters, uses facts, data, and science to indisputably shut down major misconceptions regarding our ability to end extreme poverty over the next several decades. The well executed letter is packed with great videos, charts and infographics to back up points.

The first myth tackled is that Poor Countries Are Doomed To Stay Poor.  Just by showing the before and after pictures of the evolution of underdeveloped cities that have transformed over the decades into modern metropolises proves  this statement is false. The progress is indisputable, and if it can happen in some of the cities shown in the letter, then it can happen anywhere.  War, corruption, politics, and geography will always be the biggest enemies of progress.  As the letter states however;  there are many elements that contribute to extreme poverty that we now have the solutions for.

So the easiest way to respond to the myth that poor countries are doomed to stay poor is to point to one fact: They haven’t stayed poor. Many—though by no means all—of the countries we used to call poor now have thriving economies. And the percentage of very poor people has dropped by more than half since 1990.-Bill Gates

The second myth is that Foreign Aid is a Big Waste. This frustrates me, when the general population is under the misconception that 25% of our budget is spent on foreign aid, and the reality is less than 1% ! Foreign Aid has greatly helped progress in many ways and although it is not perfect, major global breakthroughs have resulted from it.  Just take a look at the infographic below to get an idea of some ways it has contributed to over the years:

What_Aid_Buys_CG.AL-Infographic_MASTER-06_1-21UPDATE

The third myth is that Saving Lives Leads To Overpopulation. According to the World Health Organization Globally, around 54.5 million people die each year. One in eight of these deaths occurs in children under the age of 5, and most of those are from preventable causes. Not only is it the humane thing to prevent the deaths that we can, but when more children survive, family sizes shrink. The below video does an amazing job of explaining why:

I really encourage you to read the 2014 Gates Annual Letter in its entirety yourself. It is a worthy read. Bravo to Bill and Melinda Gates.

By almost any measure, the world is better than it has ever been. People are living longer, healthier lives. Many nations that were aid recipients are now self-sufficient. You might think that such striking progress would be widely celebrated, but in fact, Melinda and I are struck by how many people think the world is getting worse. The belief that the world can’t solve extreme poverty and disease isn’t just mistaken. It is harmful. That’s why in this year’s letter we take apart some of the myths that slow down the work. The next time you hear these myths, we hope you will do the same.

Black Friday & Cyber Monday Are Over: 5 Ways To Give On #GivingTuesday

Black Friday & Cyber Monday Are Over: 5 Ways To Give On #GivingTuesday

Today,December 3 is #GivingTuesday, a movement inspired by The United Nations Foundation & 92Y to create a national day of giving that kicks off the giving season on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Here are just a few of the ways you can give back this year:

1.  ONE thinks the perfect #GivingTuesday gift is Heifer and ONE’s Limited Edition GoatGiving just one goat to a family in need can be enough to change their entire lives. One goat can provide up to one ton of milk a year – and that translates to milk, cheese, butter and other dairy products a family can sell on the market for income. And not just temporarily – the benefits of livestock are long-term and only grow over time. Just take a look at this infographic .

3. For #Giving Tuesday every dollar donated to WaterAid for safe water and toilets will be matched. If Water Aid can raise $50,000 by midnight, that amount will be doubled! Sip it, quench it, save it, give it, #doubleit with WaterAid for #GivingTuesday.

4. Support Every Mother Counts For as little as $5, you can help provide transportation for a pregnant woman in Uganda, so that she has access to life saving care when she may need it most.  100% of every dollar that is contributed will be directed to programs on the ground.

Christy Turlington Burns Is My Girl Crush

Christy Turlington Burns Is My Girl Crush

Christy Turlington Burns is my girl crush because today she ran the New York City Marathon for mothers everywhere.

Christy Turlington BurnsIt’s not just because I grew up flipping through the pages she graced in fashion magazines.  Not just because she married Ed Burns, who is the totally hot and  amazingly talented Director & Actor. Or that she perfected her yoga practice, along the way producing a line of conscientiously made yoga gear. It is because she then went on to champion for mothers around the world with Every Mother Counts. After her own frightening experience during childbirth Christy became aware that her scenario could have been fatal, as it is for many women globally without access to the quality healthcare she had been provided. Every year hundreds of thousands of women die during or due to childbirth, mostly from preventable causes.

I have a girl crush on Christy because today she and her Every Mother Counts Team #RunEMC ran in the New York City Marathon to raise money for maternal health with the tag line, “we are running so other mothers don’t have to”.   And I think that is AMAZING. Recently I ran the FEED 10k and barely made it across the finish line, I can’t imagine the strength and dedication it takes to run a marathon!

This photo posted on Facebook the other day stopped me in my tracks.

It made me think, this is why I do what I do, and I want to do more.  It made me think about the organizations I know who posted this photo, Maternova and Flight For Every Mother, of  Clean Birth Kits, and of Every Mother Counts, and Christy running the marathon. All for the sake of preventing a mother from losing her life while giving birth to another.

Why do we run?  Every Mother Counts participates in the NYC Marathon annually and other running events throughout the year to raise awareness about the impact distance and lack of transportation have on maternal mortality.  Whether it’s a 5K, 10K, half or full marathon these familiar racing mile-markers represent common distances pregnant and laboring women must travel in many parts of the world to reach basic and emergency healthcare services. Most of the time, they travel these distances on foot.  When roads are un-passable, transportation is unavailable and distances are too far, countless women go without prenatal care or skilled assistance at birth and far too often, the results are dangerous and tragic. Distance is the leading contributor that kills almost 300,000 women per year from pregnancy and childbirth-related conditions.-EMC Website

Here is the exciting thing, even though we didn’t run the marathon today, (I actually just got out of my pajamas), this month by downloading and using my favorite App, Charity Miles we can all participate in team Every Mother Counts. Charity Miles donates 25 cents for every mile we run or walk, so if we each do just one mile a day or a collective 26.2 miles by the end of the month, you will have generated enough funding to provide transportation for a mother in labor or in trouble to the hospital in Uganda. That or you can join the team and/or donate to the Every Mother Counts CrowdRise Page.

Congratulations to the Every Mother Counts Team for running the NYC Marathon while inspiring and helping mothers around the world. I’ll be running my #CharityMiles with you this month.
