Before there were street names and addresses in Prague there were icon medallions above the doorways to signify who lived within. They enchanted me, and it made me think about what we would have to mark our home above our door. After some thought, I decided it might be the winged heart similar to the one in the Documama logo (emblazoned in gold like the ones pictured here of course!). There are a few reasons why, not the least of which is the love in our house. My husband specializes in cardiac imaging, I was born on Valentines Day, and we love to travel. What do you think would be the medallion be above your home?

Wow, these are spectacular. And thanks for the little history lesson, too. Very interesting! 🙂 Given our love of dogs, I think that’s what we would have above our door.
A dog would be a great one! I can picture it now!
Those are gorgeous pictures! If I had to pick something to go over our door I’d have to go with some sort of lucky charm.
I love that! What a creative way to label your home. (I know they didn’t have other options at the time…but it still sounds creative to me):) Hmmm, I think our symbol would incorporate a stork. Since we first got married and started building our life together we knew we wanted children to be a big part of that.
What a beautiful sentiment!
Thats a great medallion and I love the aspects to your husbands profession! I have no idea what mine would be- I need to think about it!
Fun to think about, isn’t it?
Lovely post Elizabeth! I would have either a globe, a mountain or the sun. 🙂
I love the sun one pictured in the post, that is my favorite that I saw!
INCREDIBLE pics! My favorite is the gold crown 🙂
I loved Prague! So rich in history and beauty! I also love symbolism! Personally I would use the circle: represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, unity, strength, protection, spirituality, balance, cycle of life, beginnings and endings the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement.
Anna would love if we had a mermaid (her favorite and she was born underwater!) but as a family, I think it would be a symbol of creativity – woodworking, my husband’s art/graphic design, my kids all draw, paint, design and Ali and I love to write!
For you:
Heart means the locus of physical and spiritual being, compassion and understanding, life-giving and complex, love
Wings mean personal freedom, transformation
